You's Crazy!

The Movie I am reviewing this week is The Crazies (2010) which is a remake of the 1973 Romero film of the same title. I have seen this movie twice and the original once. Unlike most remakes I actually have to say this movie is done quite well.

If you haven't seen this film yet or don't know exactly what it is about then I guess that is where I will start.

The film is about a small town that is plagued by a manmade toxin that contaminates the local water supply and turns the towns inhabitants into insane homicidal maniacs. You can't ask for much more in a film now can you?

The protagonist in this film is the town's Sheriff which is played by Timothy Olyphant who I have to say has a really good performance in this film. The sheriff and his wife, along with what seems to be the only other law enforcement in town, his deputy Russell (Joe Anderson) try to escape all of the madness.

Not only do they have to escape the crazies but also the military that is there too clean up the mess. This movie goes from horror to almost a paranoid conspiracy film. Which I feel is the one flaw with the story. Yes the military is the reason for the contaminated water but I feel this movie would have been better if the focus was more on the crazies and not on the military cover up that seems to be taking place.

The film overall is quite interesting but would have been better if it kept you guessing more as to why everyone was acting so crazy and not giving away the entire plot in the first 20 minutes.

If you are looking for a few good scares and what could be considered a post apocalyptic (on a small scale anyway) survival story then this may be the film for you.

I give this remake a 4 out of 5 - It is a step up from the original but is still lacking in some plot areas.
